How to introduce betta fish to tank mates

Reduce Aggression and Keep the Peace

Not all bettas are compatible with tankmates — but when done right, a community tank is possible.

Best Tankmates for Bettas:

Peaceful snails (mystery, nerite)

Shrimp (with caution)

Small rasboras

Pygmy corydoras

Kuhli loaches (in larger tanks)

Tips Before Adding Tankmates:

Use a tank that’s 10+ gallons

Provide lots of cover (plants, wood, caves)

Rearrange decor before introducing new fish

Never add fin-nippers or flashy fish like guppies

Introduction Steps:

1. Add tankmates first and allow them to settle for 24–48 hours.

2. Introduce betta with lights off.

3. Observe closely for flaring, chasing, or stress.

4. Have a backup plan (divider or separate tank) just in case.

Signs It’s Not Working:

Betta constantly chases or flares

Shrimp or fish hide nonstop

Nipped fins or floating behavior
