How to set up a betta breeding tank

The Ideal Environment for Courtship and Fry Survival

Creating the right setup for breeding bettas ensures a successful spawn and reduces stress or injury during the mating process.

Tank Size:

5 to 10 gallons (bare-bottom preferred)

Key Equipment:

Heater set to 80–82°F

Sponge filter (off during spawning, on after)

Indian almond leaf or catappa leaf for tannins

Plastic wrap, bubble wrap, or styrofoam cup for nest site

Floating plants (optional, helps female hide)

Lid or cover (bettas could jump)

Setup Steps:

1. Fill tank with 4–6 inches of dechlorinated water.

2. Add heater and allow a few hours to stabilize temperature.

3. Add leaf litter for tannins and stress reduction.

4. Install a soft sponge filter (turn it off when spawning starts).

5. Place a cup or floating surface for the male’s bubble nest. A piece of bubble wrap works great!

6. Introduce the male, and later float the female in a container for previewing.

Tips:

Keep light low or ambient to reduce stress.

Do not add substrate — bare bottom makes egg collection and cleanup easier.

Clean the tank before pairing — no snails or tankmates.
